The John W. Gardner Leadership Award honors visionaries who have empowered constituencies, strengthened participation, and inspired movements. Award recipients are builders — people who, apart from personal achievements, have raised the capacity of others to advance the common good. Their leadership has either had national or international impact or, if at the regional level, has attracted wide recognition and imitation. Maximum award: $10,000. Eligibility: Gardner Award recipients may be of any age, may be the creators of needed institutions or may concentrate on education and advocacy that changes public opinion. Deadline: January 31, 2013.
National Council of Teachers of English: Edwyna Wheadon Postgraduate Training Scholarship <http://www.ncte.org/second/awards/wheadon>
Edwyna Wheadon Postgraduate Training Scholarship provides funding for professional development experiences for English/Language Arts teachers in public educational institutions, to enhance teaching skills and/or career development in teaching. Maximum award: $500. Eligibility: teachers of English/Language Arts in a publicly funded institution. Deadline: January 31, 2013.
American Academy of Dermatology: Shade Structure Program <http://www.aad.org/public/sun/grants.html>
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Shade Structure Program gives grants for the purchase of permanent shade structures designed to provide shade and ultraviolet (UV) ray protection for outdoor areas. AAD also provides a permanent sign to be displayed near the shade structure that promotes the importance of sun safety. Maximum award: $8,000. Eligibility: nonprofit organization or public schools that primarily serve children and teens 18 and younger; demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sun safety and skin cancer awareness by having a sun safety/skin cancer awareness program in place for at least one year prior to application; and are sponsored by an AAD member dermatologist. Deadline: February 1, 2013.

The Education Commission of the States James Bryant Conant Award is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to improving education across the country in significant ways such as: providing leadership on groundbreaking task forces or committees; publishing works and/or conducting research that profoundly influenced thinking on public education in the United States and/or had a substantial impact on policy; shepherding groundbreaking education reform through the legislative process; and/or demonstrating exemplary service as a public figure or elected official deeply involved in improving education for all. The Coalition for Community Schools is now accepting nominations for its Community Schools of Excellence Awards. The Individual Community Schools Awards will go to schools that have been operating as community schools for at least three years and have demonstrated success. Three individual schools will be recognized. Maximum award: $2,500. Eligibility: schools that have been operating as community schools for at least three years. Deadline: December 15, 2012.

Coalition for Community Schools: Community School Initiative Awards
The Community School Initiative Awards will go to initiatives with joint efforts between schools and community stakeholders that have organized multiple community school sites with a strong commitment to scaling up across the community or school systems. Up to two initiatives will be recognized. Maximum award: $5,000. Eligibility: school systems operating more than one community school for more than three years, which has both community leadership and an intermediary organization (e.g., a CBO, institution of higher education, United Way, consortium of organizations, local education fund, local government, etc.) Deadline: December 15, 2012.

NCTM: Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants for Grades 9–12 Teachers
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants help create senior high classroom materials or lessons connecting mathematics to other fields. Materials may be in the form of books, visual displays, computer programs or displays, slide shows, videotapes, or other appropriate media. The focus of these materials should be on showing the connectivity of mathematics to other fields or to the world around us. Any acquisition of equipment or payment of personal stipends must be critical to the grant proposal and may not be a major portion of the proposed budget. Any published sources must be documented. Proposals must address the following: the plan for developing and evaluating materials, the connectivity to other fields or disciplines, and anticipated impact on students’ learning.
Maximum award: $4,000.
Eligibility: current (as of October 15, 2012) Full Individual or E-Members of NCTM who currently teach mathematics in grades 9-–12 at least 50 percent of the school day.
Deadline: November 9, 2012.

City National Bank: Reading is the Way Up
City National Bank is now accepting applications for grants to support literacy-based projects at public and private elementary, middle, and high schools in California, Nevada, and New York. Recipients can create, augment, or expand literacy projects that are judged to be creative and engaging, and that may help improve student achievement. Awards can be used for books, videos, CDs, DVDs, computer software or hardware, or in other ways as long as the recipient shows that the project for which funds are sought will support literacy.
Maximum award: $500.
Eligibility: any full-time teacher, librarian, or administrator at schools in counties where City National has offices. Deadline: November 30, 2012.

National Geographic: International Photography Contest for Kids
The National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids invites children to enter their photographs in four categories: animals, people, scenery, and humor. Maximum award: 16.1-megapixel digital camera; an 8GB memory card; a copy of the books National Geographic Kids Almanac 2013, Weird But True 4, Everything Dogs, and Ultimate Weird But True.
Eligibility: legal residents of the United States between the ages of 6 and 14 on October 31, 2012.
