Last week my personal savings account was levied for $ 8,000 because California’s Employment Development Department (EDD) incorrectly assumed my family’s hotel in Maui was still operational after it was destroyed in the Lahaina fires August 2023. They told me today they thought we were still paying payroll to California employees and just not paying our taxes.
That craziest part? I was never even an owner or employee of that business. That fact that the government can just take funds out of my bank account because they WRONGLY assumed that a company other family members of mine owned/operated was still operational after the fires is crazy. Luckily, I had good documentation that our hotel burned down and is no longer operational and that the levy was against my personal bank account. After phone calls and emails, I will be getting that money back to my bank account. But ya, your money in the bank isn’t your money.
