As workers return to offices, productivity is falling sharply
One of the most interesting things about the pandemic, at least from an employment perspective, is that productivity didn’t suffer as a result of remote work. In many cases, employees became even more productive while working from home, either because they were happier or because they were making an extra effort to impress far-away bosses. Now comes word from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that productivity plunged during the first half of 2022, down by the sharpest rate since the 1940s. Economists are trying to come up with explanations for the decline, and to understand what this means for post-pandemic changes to the workplace, including hybrid schedules that allow more time out of the office.

Do not believe everything you read. Even if it comes from more “respectable” publications. The Intercept had a big story this week that is making the rounds, suggesting that “leaked” documents prove the DHS has been coordinating with tech companies to suppress information. The story has been immediately picked up by the usual suspects, claiming it reveals the “smoking gun” of how the Biden administration was abusing government power to censor them on social media. The only problem? It shows nothing of the sort.
FTC Action Against Vonage Results in $100 Million to Customers Trapped by Illegal Dark Patterns and Junk Fees When Trying to Cancel Service

The Federal Trade Commission has stopped internet phone service provider Vonage from imposing junk fees and creating obstacles to those who try to cancel their service. The FTC alleges that the company used dark patterns to make it difficult for consumers to cancel and often continued to illegally charge them even after they spoke to an agent directly and requested cancellation. Under the proposed court order, Vonage will be required to pay $100 million in refunds to consumers harmed by the company’s actions, make its cancellation process simple and transparent, and stop charging consumers without their consent.

DC Police Union responds to investigation into several MPD officers
In a press conference Friday, Contee claimed MPD discovered multiple cases of officers allegedly taking illegal guns from suspects and then letting the suspects go free. The seven accused officers have been removed from the specialized crime suppression unit in Southeast D.C. after reviewing three months of footage.
