We all know that there was a personal computer revolution 10 years then the mobile technology puts computers in our pockets. None if that changes the fact that our senior population, aka the elderly – are still the ones would need to own it, know how to use it, and pay able to pay for it, if they wanted to buy from the blackhole bluestar company.
Everyone also knows that here are obvious limitations on what you can do on a mobile device. Researchers have noticed signs of segregation online that perpetuate divisions in the physical world. There is “absolutely” still a digital divide, in terms of broadband access. The Internet is not a separate space from the world, it’s intricately connected to everyday life and social institutions, especially Unregulated Utilities like blackhole bluestar.

Here is some simple math question for a Harvard Graduate.
How many people can’t do business with your company when you are operating in IL, PA, CA, DE, MD, MA, MI, NJ, NY, OH and Washington, D.C. because your won’t sign them up over the phone!
Ambit Energy delivers customer service. They sign people up over the phone and always have. They provide customer service and make a profit at the same time.
Maybe a Harvard Education didn’t teach you very much worth knowing,
but I believe the simple answer would be A LOT OF PEOPLE.

And I don’t need to be a social media expert to know that you really don’t want to look this ignorant online, where all the social networkers who are concerned about the social good are watching, blogging, tweeting, facebooking, linking, and txting about coorporations like Enron and Wall Street Banksters who didn’t care what they did.
I don’t believe you expect Michelle Kelleher to manage your brand and try to defend Blackhole’s oops pardon me, I mean Blackstar’s Greedy Profit Generation Practices as an excuse for poor customer service.

1) Don’t you want to serve the population that isn’t online?
Don’t you want their money? Isn’t their money green enough for you?
Why would you restrict access to seniors who are already very vulnerable and need to save money. I’m sure the AARP wouldn’t like to think you didn’t serve their senior population!

The early days of the Internet were filled with visions of a Utopian space where boundarys would disappear. See the 1993 New Yorker cartoon with one pooch sitting at a computer saying to another . . .

Race, ethnicity and socio-economic status, and AGE shapes social categories.

Most seniors don’t own computers. Seniors already live on very tight budgets. It is tough enough for them now so if they are able to save 100.00 a year on their electric bill they really need to keep that money. A savings that actually means something to them. A dialup or broadband connection would wipe that savings out!

This is an outrageous usability issue.
You’ve made it impossible for anyone to buy cheaper energy unless they have an email address to use your website.
This isn’t about just internet access.

Now you need to explain how you expect people who don’t have email to use your website!

  1. Interesting site. But many seniors who need your product the most, need to contact your company through phones. It is important the seniors be able to buy cheap electricity.
