‘Like venom coursing through the body’ – Enzyme may drive COVID death

Like venom coursing through the body: Researchers identify mechanism driving COVID-19 mortality

Summary: Researchers have identified what may be the key molecular mechanism responsible for COVID-19 mortality — an enzyme related to neurotoxins found in rattlesnake venom.

It is an enzyme very similar to that of rattlesnake venom that is the key mechanism responsible for mortality from Covid-19. The discovery was made by researchers from the University of Arizona, in collaboration with Stony Brook University and Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in the study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Researchers analyzed blood samples from two cohorts of Covid-19 patients, one of 127 patients admitted to Stony Brook University between January and July 2020 and a second independent cohort of 154 patient samples also collected by Stony Brook and Banner University. Medical Center of Tucson between January and November 2020. Discovering that the circulation of the enzyme sPLA2-IIA, the enzyme put in the spotlight by research, may be the most important factor responsible for mortality in patients with Covid: “When the activated enzyme circulates at high levels – in healthy individuals it is found in low concentrations – it has the ability to “grind” the membranes of vital organs. Many patients in the study who died from Covid had levels that were too high, ”said Floyd Chilton, senior co-author of the paper and director of the College’s Arizona Precision Nutrition and Wellness Initiative.

According to the study, Covid was lethal in 63% of patients with severe covid-19 and sPLA2-IIA levels equal to or greater than 10 nanograms per milliliter.
