The IRS uses these summonses when seeking information about possible tax abuse by individuals whose identities are unknown.
Trident Trust, founded in the British Virgin Islands in the 1980s, is one of the largest players in the world of offshore finance, where wealthy clients set up opaque shell companies and trusts.
