According to CNN and the Guttmacher Institute, there were more than 1 million abortions in the United States in 2023, marking the highest number in a decade, despite a record number of near-total bans and restrictions. Excluding the 14 states with near-total bans, nearly every other state saw an increase in the number of abortions provided last year. Since 2020, the total number of abortions provided in the U.S. went up 10%, and states without bans saw a 25% increase. Medication abortion was by far the most common method, with nearly two-thirds of recipients receiving medication — mifepristone and misoprostol — as opposed to surgery. The legality of mifepristone is set to be argued before the Supreme Court this month, as anti-choice advocates try to restrict access. The numbers underscore a well-known fact about abortion, that its legality is irrelevant to its necessity. Ultimately, abortion is a medical procedure and a necessary one in cases of fetal unviability and when a mother’s health is at risk.
