NYC libraries are offering digital library cards to anyone in the US.
They also have digital copies of 1000’s of books banned in states like Florida and Texas.
The NYPL is opening access to a selection of commonly banned books (including Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender, Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger via its free e-reading app, SimplyE, now through May.
The “unbanned books” can be browsed, borrowed, and read on any iOS or Android device via SimplyE, the free e-reader app, for those 13 and older. There’s a specific “Books For All” collection that has hundreds of out-of-copyright/public domain books available to anyone in the country, with or without a library card. The “unbanned books” will be in that collection, with the added bonus of no wait times to read them.

To gain access, NYPL’s free e-reader app, SimplyE, can be downloaded for iPhone or Android. Books are automatically returned at the end of the lending period, and you can request to renew a digital checkout if no one else has a hold on the title.

The Union League was against slavery and ponied up all the money to outfit and arm the Union Army.

The Philadelphia Club members started with the Union club’s men who wanted to protect the slavery business.

In October a 107-member group called the Concerned Members of the Union League wrote a letter to then-club president Craig Mills saying the DeSantis event “poses outsized immediate and long-term reputational risk to the Union League,” The Inquirer reported.
Union League officials reportedly responded by threatening to oust members who spoke publicly about the event.

Like most clubs of the 19th and early 20th century, the Union League of Philadelphia was only open to white men. However, in 1972, the club allowed its first Black member. The following decade, in the 1980s, it allowed its firm female member.
The organization is considered to be politically conservative. It drew criticism from its members for giving a gold medal, the same award it gave to Lincoln, to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in 2022. Other recipients of the award include George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Donald Rumsfeld.
