There are currently 33 states in America that exempt churches from reporting child abuse. We have laws requiring teachers, doctors, therapists, etc. to report child abuse – but the clergy doesn’t have to.

We know the Catholic Church hides sexual predators within it’s ranks. Now we know it’s defending laws to shield it from reporting abuse it discovers in the confession booth. Time to yank the tax-exempt status of churches who don’t report the abuse.

Ask any advocate who does legislative work – the biggest opposition to any reform to laws regarding sexual abuse, come from insurance companies… and the church. Especially, but not only, the Catholic church.

Church defends clergy loophole in child sex abuse reporting
HB90 targeted Utah’s “clergy-penitent privilege,” a law similar to those in many states that exempts clergy of all denominations from the requirement to report child abuse if they learn about the crime in a confessional setting.
The most needed place for protecting children, the flock.
There are zero consequences for the church.
It’s time Federal Gov. Mandate all churches must report sexual abuse. Children are humans and need protection from adults who join churches for the sole purpose of child abuse exemptions.
