CIVIL WAR SONGS

DIXIE (also known as Dixieland) is a nickname for the Southern United States, especially those states that composed the Confederate States of America. The term originally referred to the states south of the Mason–Dixon line, but now is more of a cultural reference, referring to parts of the southern United States.

Dixie (n.) “the southern United States,” 1859, of obscure origin, first attested in the song of that name, which was popularized, if not written, by Ohio-born U.S. minstrel musician and songwriter Dan Emmett (1815-1904); perhaps a reference to the Mason-Dixon Line, but there are other well-publicized theories dating to the Civil War. Popularized nationwide in minstrel shows.  A Louisiana based currency, of which the ‘ten’ bill was named for the french ‘dix.’ They were called ‘dixies’ by the local population, and the area around Louisiana became known as ‘dixieland.’

French History in New Orleans dates to the 17 th century when the Crescent City was nothing but swampland. In 1682, the French laid claim to a huge chunk of North America and named it ‘La Louisaine’ in honor of the Duke of Orléans, who ruled France until the young Louis XV could ascend to power.

The French Quarter is the oldest part of New Orleans. The original twenty blocks that formed the fledgling city of New Orleans were laid out in 1721 around the Place d’Armes, now Jackson Square. Most of the houses in the French Quarter were built before Louisiana was sold to the United States in 1803.

THE KKK’s Second War On Terror

THE KKK conservative base vs. the moderate establishment.

1700

1700’s White Scottish Presbyterian congregations made up of Highlanders had settled in North Carolina in the 1700s. Slaves in North Carolina who could speak only Gaelic. A group of Hebrideans, on landing at Cape Fear, heard a Gaelic voice in the dialect of their village. When they rounded the corner they saw a black man speaking the language and assumed they too would turn that colour because of the sun. When I made these connections, I thought: ‘That’s it, I’m going to the Hebrides.”
Scotland’s darker role in the slave trade is also well known.
Scots were influential in founding the Ku Klux Klan, including the traditional Scottish symbol of the burning cross and the KKK’s oath ceremony, which originated from a Highland custom. Mount Zion Church in Killen, Alabama is here because of their own Celtic connection to the Gaelic psalm singers of the Western Isles. Ruff sees the discovery of shared tradition as a way of making peace, using music as a bridge between the descendents of slaves and the descendents of slave masters.

George Wallace “Segregation Forever” Speech

“Today I have stood, where once Jefferson Davis stood, and took an oath to my people. It is very appropriate then that from this Cradle of the Confederacy, this very Heart of the Great Anglo-Saxon Southland, that today we sound the drum for freedom as have our generations of forebears before us done, time and time again through history. Let us rise to the call of freedom loving blood that is in us and send our answer to the tyranny that clanks its chains upon the South. In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny… and I say … segregation today … segregation tomorrow … segregation forever.” (Inaugural address of Governor George Wallace 1963)
