NEVER UNDERESTIMATE ANYONE

A woman in a cheap dress and her husband in a modest suit got off the train in Boston and timidly walked to the office of the president’s secretary at Harvard University.

“We’d like to see the president,” the man said softly.

“He’s busy,” the secretary replied.

“We’ll wait,” the woman replied.

For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping the couple would eventually leave, but they didn’t. The secretary finally decided to interrupt the president.

“Maybe if you talk to them for a few minutes, they’ll leave,” the secretary told the president.

He grimaced in distaste but agreed and strode arrogantly toward the couple.

The woman said to him:

“We had a son who attended Harvard for a year. He loved Harvard and was happy here, but he died in an accident. My husband and I would like to erect a building on campus in memory of our son.”

The president exclaimed:

“A building?! Do you have any idea how much a building costs? Here at Harvard, we’ve spent more than 7.5 million dollars on buildings!”

For a moment, the woman was silent. Then she turned to her husband and said softly:

“Is that such a small amount of money to start a university? Why don’t we create our own?”

Mr. Leland Stanford and his wife stood up and left, traveling to Palo Alto, California, where they established the university that bears their name, Stanford University.

Today, Stanford University is ranked number one in the world, ahead of Harvard.

How easy it is to judge by appearances, and how easy it is to be wrong when… you judge by appearances.
