Wait a Minute, is this encrypted or is everyone listening through a back door?

TETRA is broken.

#TETRA #radio standard

used by law enforcement
around the world

has had a hidden back door for 25 years

In Encrypted Police And Military Radios.

Buckle up!

The first generation of mobile networks used analog technology, which meant that calls were not encrypted. This made it possible for anyone with a radio scanner to listen in on conversations. It used radio waves which made them impossible to record and track… motorola/nextel had the exclusive rights to the radio technology… 3g rollout made the technology obsolete… u can recreate it with cellular technology but that records everything that’s not E2E encrypted.

From Power Grids to Airports: TETRA Radio Hacking Risks Global Infrastructure

These vulnerabilities have been dubbed TETRA

Researchers Find ‘Backdoor’ in Encrypted Police and Military Radios

An intentional backdoor discovered in encrypted radio comms used globally for over 25 years.

Back doors in encrypted European radio systems for industrial use, also used in the U.S.

Code Kept Secret for Years Reveals Its Flaw—a Backdoor
A secret encryption cipher baked into radio systems used by critical infrastructure workers, police, and others around the world is finally seeing sunlight. Researchers say it isn’t pretty.

NYPD radio encryption could obliterate NYC news – “We can do our job now, but if encrypted radios come, we can only do our job when police notify us, then it is police controlling the press,” Scootercaster said “This should never be the case.”

NYPD precinct radio frequencies being converted to “encrypted” channels that shut the public out of police communications. The six precincts of the Brooklyn North patrol abruptly switched to encrypted radio channels this month, shutting the public and the press out of their regular communications.

@josephfcox story about a back door found in one of the encryption algorithms used. TETRA, encrypted radio used by UK emergency services, appears to have an *intentional* hack built in

The end result, however, are radios with traffic that can be decrypted using consumer hardware like an ordinary laptop in under a minute.

Over and out? NYPD radio encryption could obliterate various NYC news operations

Serious vulnerability in the encrypted radio communication system TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) used by police and emergency services around the world. The problem touched also Poland.

Authorities can eavesdrop/alter radio communications used by police, military, emergency services. And people still believe that whatsapp, signal, telegram, etc. are encrypted and secure!

Software defined tactical networks encrypted jamming + cyber resilience military networks + software defined radars ai in radars.
The encryption algorithms used in TETRA were kept secret until a group of Dutch researchers got their hands on them and found severe flaws, including a deliberate backdoor. This backdoor could allow someone to snoop on communications and potentially send harmful commands.
