MIT Media Lab  ETHICS

Remember …. all these people at the MIT Media Lab are involved with AI and this demands adherence to having ETHICAL STANDARDS ….
THERE ARE NO ETHICAL STANDARDS APPLIED TO ANYONE AT MIT

Is Stallman Nuts? [libreplanet-discuss] 15 Sep 2019

Richard Stallman
“I want to respond to the misleading media coverage of messages I posted about Marvin Minsky’s association with Jeffrey Epstein. The coverage totally mischaracterised my statements.
Headlines say that I defended Epstein. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’ve called him a “serial rapist”, and said he deserved to be imprisoned. But many people now believe I defended him — and other inaccurate claims — and feel a real hurt because of what they believe I said.
I’m sorry for that hurt. I wish I could have prevented the misunderstanding.” (LINK)

Anonymous:
Richard Stallman was talking about Marvin Minsky, who is dead. Stallman and his supporters make the distinction between an older teenager who was unable to give legal consent to sex, and the fact that she might be willing to have sex in a non-legal sense of being willing. To call that “assault” might suggest more violence than was actually going on, even if “sexual assault” is the technical name for a crime of statutory rape.

Is this distinction acceptable?  Even if Epstein knew she was underage, that need not mean that Minsky knew. Stallman also acknowledged a specific case in which the woman retroactively claimed she was forced by Epstein, and he believed that. He  said that his opinion on sex between adults and “consenting” children had changed over time, and that he now saw it as a problem.
As of April 2019, 34 states have set an absolute minimum marriage age by statute, which vary between 14 and 17

Remove Richard Stallman: Appendix A
The stories of thirty years of MIT women alumni. I had no idea that Richard Stallman has been so problematic, in so many different ways, for so long. I did not know that Richard Stallman has been making MIT a worse learning environment for decades, and that somehow, that behavior went on completely unchecked. The real heroes, I’m beginning to understand, are all the MIT women alumni from the 80’s and 90’s, especially in Computer Science, that had to put up with this.
1. Richard Stallman has problematic opinions.
The original email thread is not an isolated incident. MIT, by endorsing Stallman, also gives legitimacy to these ideas.

VICE Famed Computer Scientist Richard Stallman Described Epstein Victims As ‘Entirely Willing’
Stallman, a pioneer of the free software movement, argued about the definition of “sexual assault” on an MIT email listserv about the university’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

Motherboard has obtained a copy of the email thread, but has censored the names of its participants besides Stallman. The thread starts at the bottom and continues up. In the CSAIL thread, one person wrote “when this email chain inevitably finds its way into the press, the seeming insensitivity of some will reflect poorly on the entire CSAIL community,” they wrote. “Regardless of intent, this reads as ‘grasping at straws to defend our friends.'”

This is yet more proof of why academic scholars should not become involved with politicians and public figures. They are not equipped to distinguish toxic people from Good Guys.

Let me repeat. This scandal is not just that MIT-ML took money from a known human trafficker.
They took money from a known #eugenicist. Don’t let that get buried.
They launched a “Disobedience Award” for “science that doesn’t care about society’s norms.

Isn’t it about time you offered up a public accounting of how much of Jeffrey Epstein’s child rape money you took? Lawyers got your tongue?

MIT’s “disqualified” donors aren’t necessarily banned from donating, says Media Lab  whistleblower Signe Swenson, who leaked details about the lab’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, explains how its funding works. MIT listed Epstein as a “disqualified” donor. “Disqualified donors” list didn’t usually mean a donor’s money was off limits under MIT’s rules, but just that the person was considered unlikely to donate. Between Joi and the development people, it was viewed that though the money was coming from Gates and Black, the money was Jeffrey’s. When he came to MIT, he took credit for having secured those funds for the lab, and he was helping to decide how that money was spent.

“Harvard Law professor Larry Lessig has implied that the MIT administration knew about and had okayed the Media Lab’s taking Epstein’s money. Is that true?
For the small gifts, that certainly could be the case. That might have been an arrangement that was agreed to be the best or only way the Institute could do this. In terms of the Bill Gates and Leon Black giving arrangements, that is not a typical arrangement, especially given the additional information that I knew from the discussions around Epstein and the favors.”

Before Arrest, Jeffrey Epstein Was Seen With Girls Exiting His Jet
The investigation into Jeffrey Epstein was broader than previously known, and involved an allegation of recent travel with girls, newly released documents show.
“The employee said she had seen Jeffrey Epstein on two occasions get off the plane last year sometime between June or July and as late as November, once with girls who appeared to be 11 or 12 years old and another time with one who looked as young as 16”

In 1973, Barr’s father Donald, the headmaster at Manhattan’s Dalton School, hired Epstein as a calculus and physics teacher. Epstein’s mathematical skills caught the eye of Bear Stearns’ chairman, Alan “Ace” Greenberg, whose son attended the Dalton School. Greenberg hired Epstein as an options trader and the former teacher was able to amass a fortune.

*Why do we excuse people simply because they are “geniuses”?*
*As Michelle Obama says, “they are not that smart”. Even in STEM fields, I
have to agree.*
*There is nothing I have seen a man in tech do that a woman could not.
What’s more, the woman would probably be less egotistical and more
team-oriented about it.*

Remember Negroponte? he started the Media Lab.
The MIT Technology Review reported that at an all-hands meeting at the lab on Wednesday, Media Lab co-founder Nicholas Negroponte said that — if he could do it all again — he would still encourage Ito to accept Epstein’s money. One person sobbed. Another told Negroponte to shut up. And many more walked out.

Donath is particularly troubled by gifts from the late industrialist (and MIT alumnus) David Koch, who, with his brother Charles, fought to muddy the national understanding of human-caused climate change. Those gifts, Donath argued, may not have been worth the collateral damage: “Having [the name ‘Koch’] plastered all over the top scientific institution lends them a credence that they then use to do extremely destructive things, including to the believability of scientists.”
