THEY DON’T COME TO LEARN
Study: 94% Of AI-Generated College Writing Is Undetected By Teachers
BUT THEY KNOW! Oh trust me, they are detected. But we cant definitively prove its AI which is the problem. “You read that right – 97% of AI work in university courses was not flagged as possible AI by teachers.” I teach comms at a university. We can tell.
The thing is: it’s hard to PROVE it was done by ai. Why bother reporting? It’s a massive bureaucratic headache.
Eta: we are not paid enough to care that much.
Handwritten assignments and/or oral presentations done in class are usually the best option, to be honest.
The fallout from “Editing out GPTisms” also concerns me considering I’ve seen multiple instances on social media now of people picking some word that’s not even that obscure and going “You see this pop up and you know bro was on chatGPT” and things to that effect. Are we really heading towards a situation where you have to dumb your vocabulary way down when submitting anything online, school or otherwise, lest people assume you’re using AI?
Capitalism is going to deal itself out of existence, but before it does that, you’re gonna pay $50 for a latte, because inflation is going impoverish all of us before people get pissed off enough to realize that all of the last hundred years of economic progress was actually a shell game to create billionaires, while the great masses of people saw their standard of living eroded and destroyed.

In the 1880s, the director of Harvard Observatory was often frustrated with his staff, and supposedly said, “My Scottish maid could do better!” So, he decided to hire her. !! THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT HE EVER SAID THAT”
Williamina Fleming ran a team for decades, classified thousands of stars, and discovered white dwarfs and the Horsehead Nebula.
Williamina Fleming was a Scottish immigrant single mom who worked for Pickering, the director, as his maid (Mr Fleming ditched her and her young son). He hired her because being a “computer” was grunt work but he thought she had the right temperament to be patient enough to do it- you basically had to look at allllll the dots and look at which ones changed from one image to another days or months later, thousands of times. Williamina ended up running all the women who worked at Harvard as computers for many years, and did interesting things in her life like have a friendship with Andrew Carnegie and his wife. There’s a great book on all this btw if anyone is interested- The Glass Universe by Dava Sobel.

Traditional Folktales in the Classroom – Johnny Apple Seed and Apple Jack
America has a rich tradition of folk heroes. Apple Jack – the natives call it Jersey Lightnin’ – Heritage Tradition
The real Johnny Appleseed was John Chapman September 26, 1774 – March 11, 1845 who spread apples for the purpose of creating cider orchards.
According to the Explore Pennsylvania website, Chapman: Created nurseries by clearing areas of scrub and building brush fences to protect the developing “whips,” as the young trees were called, from deer and other animals. As the whips grew, he camped nearby in a wigwam-like structure and busied himself by weeding his orchard, mending the fence, starting other nurseries, or visiting frontier families. And depending on his assessment of a person’s ability to pay, he sold, traded, or simply gave away his little apple trees. When he had no more seedlings, or simply decided it was time to move on, he headed west. While some depict him as giving away apples, Chapman was essentially a businessman. John Chapman frequented Western Pennsylvania.

Hard cider was about 60 proof. When a second distillation was made, the resulting 120 proof liquor was then diluted down to 100 proof, and the barrels aged. The result was an 80 proof product that, when bottled, became known as Apple Brandy, or Apple Jack, or “Jersey Lightning.”
