The Age of Enlightenment was a philosophical movement that dominated the world of ideas in Europe in the 18th century. Centered on the idea that reason is the primary source of authority and legitimacy, this movement advocated such ideals as liberty, progress, tolerance, fraternity, constitutional government, and separation of church and state.
Respect for Science brought us the American Revolution and made America into a republic after driving out the British during the U.S. Revolutionary War (1775-1783).
This time period also saw a burgeoning interest in understanding and using science rather than religion to explain natural phenomena.
Additionally, when the U.S. became independent, it refused to adopt a national religion, instead stating in the constitution that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
