A Brazilian Supreme Court justice is adding Elon Musk to an investigation over the dissemination of fake news and is investigating him for alleged obstruction.
Elon Musk is being investigated in Brazil for the dissemination of fake news and obstruction.
Elon has refused the courts request to stop fake news from being disseminated and the court now believes he is committing crimes for obstructing Brazilian democracy.
There is an ongoing effort in Brazil to crack down on speech that is harmful to democracy which is prevalent on Twitter and impacts Democracies across the globe.
The idea that false speech is free speech is very dangerous because it says that political parties who can’t win with ideas can simply brainwash the public into agreeing with them simply by overwhelming them with lies, half truths, and violent rhetoric.
This type of speech first of all isn’t free because billions of dollars are spent in creating it.
We live in a country where half our citizens are dumb as hell and have become vaccinated from the truth. There is a win at all costs mentality. Politics has taken on the form of gladiators where it’s either win or die.
Social media is the number one cause of this and our 4th estate is the second leading cause.
The idea of free speech did not intend to include this type of speech, and Elon rather than make concessions has doubled down. Brazil is most likely going to shut down Twitter and I expect in the near future much of Europe will as will. In fact I encourage democracies world wide to contemplate abandoning any social media platform that not only allows the dissemination of misinformation or alternative facts, but also encourages its use in the name of free speech.
Billionaire social media owners are the biggest threat to democracies across the world and it is my hope that if we win the House, Senate, and the presidency that we start making laws banning the use of false speech and and not merely using community notes.
