You know what has actually disappeared? The support structure to train someone to master the craft.
This goes for almost all things. Yes, including engineering and design jobs.
Everyone wants masters but no one wants to train apprentices.
Signs/sign painting. Carpentry. Ceramics. Icon design. Everything has been optimized for easy creation, which eroded the main barrier to entry: having to master a craft’s complex tools & methods, which led to better products.
Fine craftsmanship is a singular rarity in this day and age.
It is nearly non-existent.
It used to be commonplace not so long ago.
