It’s increasingly clear that the fiasco at OpenAI is the result of a Board obsessed with Effective Altruism—the same ethical philosophy promoted by Sam Bankman-Fried while he embezzled billions.
Has any philosophical movement done more financial damage so quickly with so few adherents?
Just 18 days ago, I wrote about my encounter with the early roots of EA—and how it convinced me to end my academic study of philosophy. Less than three weeks since I wrote this, the movement has taken another huge hit to its already dubious reputation.
There are many dangerous aspects of this, but the most alarming is how Effective Altruism not only allows people to do tremendously damaging things, but that these people are put in charge of ethical oversight of huge organizations that impact almost everybody in the world. We are just beginning to grasp the harm they can do in these situations.
Below is the link to what I wrote (before the OpenAI debacle) about my personal encounter with the early roots of Effective Altruism. Are there other huge organizations with EA true believers at the helm? That might make a good list of stocks to short.
