Kevin Phillips is Dead
The mastermind behind the GOP’s “southern strategy” died this week, and it caused barely a ripple. But in many ways, that way of doing racial dog-whistle politics shapes the world we live in today.
The Southern strategy was a Republican Party electoral strategy to increase political support among white voters in the South by appealing to racism against African Americans. As the civil rights movement and dismantling of Jim Crow laws in the 1950s and 1960s.
“The whole secret of politics is knowing who hates who.”
That insight was the brainchild of Kevin Phillips, the longtime political analyst who passed away this week at 82 years old. Republican Party strategist who helped devise its Southern Strategy in the 1960s. REPUBLICANS MOVE TO THE RIGHT 1965 TO 1972:
