Musk’s takeover of Twitter is a perfect example of cultural hegemony, an idea first articulated by the Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci in the 1930s. It refers to the way the state and the ruling class use cultural institutions to maintain power. Musk’s purchase of Twitter is one recent example of this concept in action, but it’s far from the only one we’re seeing right now.
