60 Minutes FB Whistleblower

It’s incredible that Mark Zuckerberg hasn’t addressed the Whistleblower’s damning reveals. When there is a crisis – plane crash, product defect – a CEO always addresses employees and the public. Where is Zuckerberg?

This is Frances Haugen, an incredibly brave Facebook whistleblower. She handed over thousands of documents to the WSJ, Congress, and the SEC.
She filed 8 complaints with the SEC.
She was at Facebook during the January 6th Insurrection.

Whistleblower Frances Haugen is a data scientist from Iowa with a computer engineering degree and a Harvard MBA. She told us the only job she wanted at Facebook was to work against misinformation because she had lost a friend to online conspiracy theories.

Frances Haugen says in her time with Facebook she saw, “conflicts of interest between what was good for the public and what was good for Facebook.” Scott Pelley reports.

In Dec, Facebook dismantled its Civic Integrity team, weeks before the Capitol riots.
For @franceshaugen_ it was the final straw:
“I didn’t trust that they’re willing to actually invest what needs to be invested to keep Facebook from being dangerous.”

YOU CAN’T CHANGE FACEBOOK – YOU MUST DELETE OR YOU ARE COMPLICIT!

It’s not just that Facebook undermined democracies at home and abroad, made our children more depressed and suicidal, or helped amplify vaccine misinformation. It’s that they knew they were doing it, saw it was benefiting their bottom line — and decided to keep going.

This should not be surprising to anyone. How is this any different than big tobacco, fossil fuel, pesticides, opioids??? . . they always know the cost to society. They can also count on our system to shield and protect their bottom line because WEALTH MATTERS.

Because it’s going to get a lot worse. PR tip: 60 Minutes has a significantly larger audience (10mm+) than anything so far and will tease hearing. In addition, there are larger problems all coming at the same time. I’ll list them in no particular order:

He’s learned from Trump and the GOP. If you ignore it, the media will eventually move on and it will go away. Poof. Never happened. Never held accountable.

One of the richest people in the world, and what does he want? More. Being a billionaire means you have “fuck you money”. And in case there’s any ambiguity in that quote, YOU the reader, are the you in the quote. It’s the most personally signed impersonal invitation to go fuck yourself possible. Because when you’re a billionaire what else matters?

He’s never been held accountable and he believes that will continue. This isn’t a product defect. This is a feature. They’re planning on smearing and discrediting her. FB won’t have him lead that charge. A crisis would imply that something went horribly wrong with their product. Facebook is operating exactly how it’s meant to.

Where was he in 2016 with the Cambridge Analytica betrayal. This is not new. Regulation is the next step.

Whistleblower on @60Minutes was awesome Like cigarettes, we learned Facebook is a product that when used as specified by the manufacturer will harm (at least some) people. Can’t @sherylsandberg lean in and fix this?

Profits vs social responsibility. The crux of every business 101 class.
No right answer really but it shows you what kind of people are behind the business. That said, not my kind of people…

He’s not a CEO in the normal sense, i.e., one that could get removed by a Board worried about risk to the company. He’s a king, and has the same accountability structure.

He also enjoys sovereign immunity thanks to Section 230!

He doesn’t care. He knows no matter how explicitly they do evil there wouldn’t be any consequences. He got away with how many scandals already now? There is just no one to hold him and Facebook accountable meaningfully for anything.

Bingo. They’ll fix the problem when they have to, when their revenue stream is impacted. It’s like how YouTube claimed they couldn’t possibly stop vids with music, but when they were facing lawsuits, suddenly they found a way a screen for DRM & limit it.

Quite literally has nothing to say because there is no way to pr this away. It prevents him from personally stepping in it deeper.

He’s doing exactly what anyone who’s studied social media, and is in trouble would do: Waiting for the story to get buried under the next infuriating thing, or 3; when everybody forgets this was even a thing.

He’s got billions of reasons not to care, and they’re all enumerated in his bank statement.

He doesn’t care. He knows that the people who use Facebook are going to keep using Facebook and probably won’t see the story. He knows that hate and disinformation bring a lot of people to the platform and that means more ad sales and that means money in his pocket.

Delete Facebook. It is the only way to correct the problem. If you have FOMO about deleting FB that should be the alarm bell that tells you to delete. It is not important or necessary for your well being in fact it is designed to hurt you.

Deleting Facebook years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

I deactivated as well. I’d been on it since 2006, but I’m convinced it is dangerous.

Deactivated my profile in April, when family members told me they didn’t get Covid because they smoke Marijuana. They did the research on Facebook. These are people with college degrees.
