Foreign interests have spent over $530 million influencing US policy, public opinion since 2017 Today we’re making available, for the first time, a searchable database of foreign interests spending on lobbying and influence in the United States. Foreign lobbyists and other operatives acting on behalf of foreign interests wield a significant amount of power, impacting economic and diplomatic policies as well as public opinion.   The law that governs most foreign influence disclosure requirements, the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA), requires any foreign agent or lobbyist representing a foreign principal to register with the U.S. Department of Justice and file detailed public disclosures.

Public archives: more relevant today than ever
There has been a lot of noise recently about information distortion and its effects on democracy. So what better time to raise the importance of historical literacy and public archives? In gathering and promoting primary source material, archives play an essential role in modelling literacy skills and critical thinking. In analyzing this material and producing modest, reasonable conclusions, researchers aim to understand complex issues and to engage the public in the discussion. These skills are crucial tools in a democracy.

Windows Exploitation Tricks: Exploiting Arbitrary Object Directory Creation for Local Elevation of Privilege
This time I’ll detail how I was able to exploit Issue 1550 which results in an arbitrary object directory being created by using a useful behavior of the CSRSS privileged process. Once again by detailing how I’d exploit a particular vulnerability I hope that readers get a better understanding of the complexity of the Windows operating system as well as giving Microsoft information on non-memory corruption exploitation techniques so that they can mitigate them in some way.

Hallberg set to make beautiful music at Sperryville dulcimer museum
In 1998, John Hallberg picked up his first Appalachian dulcimer. He and some friends were in a shop on Howard Street in Ocracoke on North Carolina’s Outer Banks when he spied several instruments made by a local luthier (a maker of stringed instruments). “They each had ducks [carved] on the scroll, and one of them had a jumping dolphin,” said Hallberg in an interview. “I thought, ‘I’ll get the jumping dolphin and next year I’ll come back and get one with a duck head.’ I went back a couple of years later. The guy who had made the dulcimers had died. All the duck dulcimers had been sold and now I’m on [a search] for those duck dulcimers.”
A Generation Grows Up in China Without Google, Facebook or Twitter.
“Wei Dilong, 18, who lives in the southern Chinese city of Liuzhou, likes basketball, hip-hop music and Hollywood superhero movies. He plans to study chemistry in Canada when he goes to college in 2020. Mr. Wei is typical of Chinese teenagers in another way, too: He has never heard of Google or Twitter. He once heard of Facebook, though. It is ‘maybe like Baidu?’ he asked one recent afternoon, referring to China’s dominant search engine.”
