A recent study by U.S. News & World Report and Raytheon found that the number of American jobs requiring math or science knowledge increased to 16.8 million in 2013, from 12.8 million in 2008. High-school students’ interest in those subjects, however is plummeting, and lower than in 2000. Schools, businesses, and civic organizations all have important roles to play.
In 1991, money spent on Knowledge Age goods — information and communication technologies — exceeded Industrial Age goods — materials for agriculture, mining, manufacturing, etc. The $5 billion difference marked a shift in the U.S. economy from nuts-and-bolts to information-driven. Unfortunately, not much really changed in K-12 education to echo that shift.

If Davidson is found guilty on both counts of driving with a suspended license, she faces an additional two-year license suspension and fines exceeding $2,000.00. he Davidson’s are not strangers to the criminal justice system – just last year her son was convicted for operating a heroin “warehouse” in her district after police witnessed him making a sale as school students were making their way home.

Under the city’s “resign-to-run” law, municipal employees cannot campaign for elected office. Many in Philadelphia’s political circles wonder whether Brady is scheming to install Lazer as his successor, while others speculate that the building-trades unions see Brady as vulnerable and want to make a power move. Brady’s top two political aides, Ken Smukler and Don “D.A.” Jones, were indicted in October on federal charges for paying the campaign of a one-time primary rival $90,000 after he dropped out. Many people still wonder whether Brady will also take a fall. Another theory is that Lazer is simply trying to raise his profile. “It’s a head-scratcher,” Delaware County Democratic Chairman David Landau said. Landau said Brady is popular among voters in Delaware County because of his constituent services and what he called a progressive voting record. The First District runs from the Northeast river wards to South Philadelphia and across into Chester, Swarthmore, and parts of Upper Darby.

The Sackler family made billions of dollars from the sale of OxyContin, and Purdue Pharmaceuticals is valued at at least $13 billion as of 2016. In 2007, an affiliated company was ordered to pay $600 million in one of the largest pharmaceutical settlements in history for ‘felony misbranding’. The youngest Sackler, Raymond, is pictured with his wife Beverly. Raymond was in control of Purdue Pharma after Arthur died, and in 1999, passed the reigns to his son Richard. The father-son duo were working at Purdue when the company began manufacturing OxyContin and using questionable advertising practices to promote it.
Arthur, Mortimer and Raymond – are all dead, but many of their children were serving on the board of Cambridge sister company Napp Pharmaceuticals in 2016. The children and grandchildren of the three Sackler brothers, who started a pharmaceutical empire, continue to enjoy luxurious lifestyles and properties, such as the multi-million-dollar Central Park apartment in this building which is owned by Mortimer’s oldest daughter, Ilene Sackler Lefcourt – who was listed as a director of Purdue’s sister company, UK-based Napp Pharamaceutical Holdings, as of December 2016.

The eldest brother, Arthur, was a brilliant polymath, contributing not only to psychiatric research but also thriving in the fledgling field of pharmaceutical advertising. It was here that he would leave his greatest mark. As a member of William Douglas McAdams, a small New York-based advertising firm, Sackler expanded the possibilities of medical advertising by promoting products in medical journals and experimenting with television and radio marketing. MAY 4 Last day for all candidates and treasurers of political committees and lobbyists which have expended money for the purpose of influencing the nomination of candidates to file campaign expense reports or statements due by the Second Friday before the primary in the Office of the SECRETARY OF THE COMMONWEALTH and/or the county boards of elections, as the case may be. MAY 5 Not earlier than this day nor later than May 12, the county boards of elections shall publish in newspapers a notice of the date and hours of voting for any special elections, the names of offices to be elected and the names of the candidates at such special elections, the texts and explanations of Constitutional Amendments and other questions to be voted upon, and the places at which such elections are to be held in the various election districts.
