On this day in 1865, after white Southerners had extended the enslavement of countless Black people by concealing the Civil War’s end for months, Union troops arrived in Texas. #Juneteenth

#OnThisDay in 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX to read Order No. 3, which affirmed the end of slavery in the states of the former Confederacy. This momentous occasion became known as #Juneteenth, a combination of “June” & “19th.”

#OTD In 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that should have come two and a half years earlier: all enslaved people were free. #Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and a reminder that freedom delayed is justice denied.

For #Juneteenth: 70+ years after the Civil War, the WPA’s Federal Writers’ Project began interviewing elderly Americans who remembered being enslaved. These moving narratives & photos are now held here at the Library.
