@Dymaxion Software companies should not be permitted to treat the social impacts of the tools they build as externalities. When companies fail to account for and integrate activist threat models into their normal software platforms, they’re undermining the fabric of democracy in the societies those tools are used in. This harms all their users, not just the activists. Having a separate set of “secure” tools for activists imposes a time and knowledge barrier to entry on civic participation. While these tools are great as a pragmatic harm reduction response, that’s not enough. The minimum bar for a healthy democratic society is equality of opportunity. This applies most strongly to civic participation. Activism is a form of civic participation. This means the tools needed to do activism safely need to be equally available to everyone.
