Overpopulation: Media Miss The Fourth Horse of the Apocalypse

OVERPOPULATION: MEDIA MISS THE FOURTH HORSE OF THE APOCALYPSE

by Jonathan A. Weiss Esq.

The issue of overpopulation has been raised for many years.

Malthus, in 1798  with no data, extrapolated mathematically to predict a catastrophe from population outstripping resources.

Yet, there are still no mass movements or extensive media coverage in the United States and most of the world (Population Connection in Washington, D.C. is small, active, and relatively unknown).  Many recent books have sounded the alarm. Ehlrich, The Population Bomb reverberated in the media and others concerned with the trend in 2018. Three years later, ripples remain, and many worry as the danger grows but this major source of disaster is rarely, if ever, mentioned in the mass media or featured in “Western” political rhetoric. Meanwhile, India and China are surging towards one and a half billion in spite of some governmental attempts causing their own problems.

China lifts 2-child policy to 3, as demographic crisis looms

The resulting loss from overpopulation of animal and plant habitat – coupled with expanding ecological destruction to extract minerals, fossil fuels, and burning forests; new masses of poor in the world forced to burn coal and wood) has resulted in the extinction of thousands of living creatures.

  • The corresponding spread of golf courses for the wealthy has destroyed the migration of the Monarch Butterfly,  by 90%.
  • Experiments, such as the Green Deal in India to feed the swollen population were brief successes with big increases in grain output, but then as mono-culture based on chemical fertilizer and poisons, destroyed the soil, and ruined many family farmers to exacerbate the destitution and desperation of so many.
  • Many family farmers who have nothing more to lose are in the Capital protesting.
  • The obvious plight of refugees has occurred, in part, because of overcrowding. Gaza, after Israel gave it to the Palestinians and Hamas, unfortunately now produces population skyrocketing so that it has a median age of 18 and 50% of the population under 21- creating explosive pressure.

The amount of humans living on this earth has more than tripled since Hitler was toppled. It is far from clear that the world, in the best of circumstances, can sustain such a load of needy humanity, but certainly, its conjunctions with three other forces point towards dramatic doom. We must also recognize the history of barbarity, imperialism, hatred all encouraged by evil leaders, greed, monopolies, and exploitation of man and nature drive one to worry about both human nature and survival, civilization, and future generations. The evident mass multitudes of the poor and deprived of the world not only require sustenance and shelter but consume wood, coal, remaining fish, fowl, and beasts they can capture; some burn forests to plant just as the corporations do for their harvest of newly desired rare minerals, living and fossil fuels, and inappropriate crops (e.g. almonds in California sucking up water for growing and new deserts). slaughter animals and plunder plants for consumption, destroying resources present and future. Even as the poor suffer, they still must consume for sustenance and shelter, often exacerbated to death, starvation and maiming by wars and conquests. The presence of so many poor to exploit has nourished the industrial and technological revolutions to “globalization” with international “supply chains” with weak links (e.g. computer chips) accompanying the production of badly produced products replacing crafts, requiring massive use of plastic which poses one of the greatest ecological problems on land and in sea.

Every sane informed American knows about three obvious horses of the apocalypse. There is a plague, with debates about its origin, and no possible prediction when it will end. Viral plagues are a recent phenomena not arriving with increasing frequency. The first conference on global circulation was in 1989 but it and the 1993 book Emerging Viruses did not even mention coronaviruses. ProMed was launched in 1994 to create early warning of infectious deceases of all sorts. They first reported the current virus on December 30th 2019 (after the SARS virus in 2002 first induced and encouraged research and activity it this field.). Their work has generally been unheeded. The rest is the unfolding history of human annihilation. The carnage, economic, cultural, and social damage now are part of our daily lives, with aspects daily reported in news outlets.

Global warming, obviously inevitable, may have reached the point of no return. Rachel Carson in 1982 wrote the first book with major impact to warn about the damage to the environment that human activity was causing with the use of poisons creating agricultural, wild life, and fauna devastating damage. Many have written about it and the scientifically demonstrable causes but, few have done anything. Now, after the two hottest years in recorded history, with extraordinary weather (storms, poles melting, floods, droughts, record temperatures), after a young Swedish girl drew attention to it, scientists were interviewed, and it too is part of the daily news. Such notice may be too late.

As Hitler demonstrated, ending about seventy-six years ago, a fulminating narcissistic evil person can attract, obtain attention, followers, destroy civilized institutions and norms for governing. He was able to unleash  silent anger, resentment, prejudice, and the rigidity of closed minded hatreds. Hitler freed demons that now embrace cults, conspiracies, and reject paths to truth, honor, and even love. After massacring the Jews, gypsies, and homosexuals primarily, the Germans appear to have rejoined the group of what is considered civilized nations. This occurred in large part by the Marshall plan bestowing money and goods for the Europeans.

These three horses of the apocalypse have become the daily fare in the media. Overpopulation, the fourth. also reinforces, augments, and nourishes the other three which it has also partially caused. It is no accident that Covid 19 occurred in the world’s most populous country in one of the many cities with over 20 million. This new virus, persistent and tenacious, mutates into deadly forms entering into previous pockets free from the infection. It thrives on crowds, people huddled together, forced together in crowds, particularly closed shelter. With so many millions unable to get prevention or care, overpopulation and associated food consumption and need for shelter in adequate space may have set the scene, now it makes an end to a mutating virus beyond present human capacity – with contingency the major hope. The human causes of global warming come from many people, multiples of past populations, for massive impact.

The cults and crazies fill the internet and much of the media with absurd fabricated fantasies, that deny global warming and claim Covid is a type of flue or a hoax. They fantasize that vaccines and masks (unlike seat belts, traffic laws, rules of public behavior) are not matters of public health but instead the one type of rule an imposition to be opposed for violating “freedom.” The spectacles of suffering unto death occurs from Peru to Mississippi to India, people are dying like flies, while leaders continue lie, and Covid continues its spread.

Let us not forget. Overpopulation breeds overpopulation. The gallop of the forces of four horses have loud resonant hoof beats.

The connections of all four yoked together may soon roll over so many people alive and future populations. Why does no one in American mass media say anything about Overpopulation? The rhetoric about the other horses abounds and that too is reported.

Where is the serious outcry about Overpopulation?

  1. So let me get this straight: we can afford to spend $700 billion a year on defense, but we can’t afford to spend $350 billion a year to defend ourselves against the climate crisis?

  2. I should like to add and emphasize that overpopulation has contributed greatly to global homelessness and global lack of housing (particularly affordable or public). There were some projections that hunger would be eradicated by now by active organizations but there are at least 50 million reported as starving to death with war and weapons also in play.
