Jared Kushner spent much of his White House tenure cozying up to MBS & Saudi Arabia. Six months after leaving Washington, his private equity firm landed $2 billion in investments from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund.
Six months after leaving the White House[1][3][4][5][6]. The investment was secured despite objections from the fund’s advisers about the merits of the deal[1]. Kushner’s newly formed private equity firm, Affinity Partners, planned to raise up to $7 billion in all, according to a document prepared last summer for the Saudi fund’s board, but so far he appears to have signed up few other major investors[1]. Most of the $2.5 billion under management reported by Mr. Kushner’s firm in its most recent public filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission appears to be the $2 billion from Saudi Arabia[1]. The House Oversight Committee is investigating the $2 billion Saudi investment in Kushner’s firm[5].
Jared Kushner’s private equity firm concealed the origins of Saudi-backed funds and used the SEC’s own rules to help them do it. According to a report by The Washington Post, Kushner’s firm, Affinity Partners, was able to legally hide the identity of his investors, labeling them only as “non-United States persons” due to SEC rules on reporting assets from private equity fund investors. The majority of the funds, which totaled over $2 billion, came from Saudi Arabia’s $620 billion Public Investment Fund, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who reportedly ignored advice from a Saudi panel against investing in Kushner’s firm[1]. It is worth noting that Kushner’s firm also received hundreds of millions of dollars in investments from the UAE and Qatar[5][6].
