I’ve spent the last 18 months investigating how our government reached the point of taking children away from their parents as a way to discourage migration to the United States. Here’s my story about how and why it happened, and who’s responsible.

Subject: An astonishing feat of reporting

Several years ago, I began to take notice of Caitlin Dickerson’s journalism. Immigration was her beat at The New York Times, and she was breaking story after story about, among other subjects, the Trump administration’s efforts to separate children from their migrant parents. This scheme seemed to me to be the most morally dubious Trump policy, which is no mean feat. I hold what might be described as moderate views on immigration, but child separation wasn’t about policy; cruelty—to borrow from my colleague Adam Serwer—appeared to be its only point. I wanted to understand more, and I asked Caitlin if she would be interested in joining us at The Atlantic, where she would have the space and time to go deep on the issues underlying our country’s agonized and eternal debate about immigration. Luckily for me, and for our readers, she said yes. And now, a little more than 18 months after she joined The Atlantic’s cadre of world-beating writers, Caitlin has pulled off a dazzling achievement, writing the definitive account of the creation and implementation of a tragic and ruthless policy, one that could be implemented again, if Donald Trump, or one of his ideological acolytes, should come to power in 2024.

Caitlin’s cover story, which you can read here, is a history-making accomplishment. It is, among other things, the longest story we’ve published in memory, weighing in at nearly 30,000 words—but do not fear, it makes for a propulsive and mesmerizing reading experience. Caitlin, working with her editor, Scott Stossel, has constructed a narrative in which the relentless accretion of facts points us in a terrifying direction. It turns out that the story of the Trump administration’s child-separation policy is not simply a story of a consciously merciless program, implemented by consciously merciless men. It is the story of what happens when a bureaucracy is left to its own devices, when leaders abdicate their responsibilities, when American ideals are sacrificed on the altar of career advancement and self-preservation. Caitlin’s investigative skills are virtually without parallel in American journalism, and, in her cover story, she exposes the secret history of a heinous policy, and names names—including the names of people responsible who are still serving in government today.

I’m very pleased to be able to present to our readers Caitlin’s investigation—in English and in Spanish—and I hope you see this story, and so many others like it, as part of our continuing attempt to fulfill The Atlantic’s historic mission, which is to tell the truth regardless of the consequences, and to use our journalism to help create a more perfect union.

Thank you for being a subscriber and helping us carry forward that mission.
