The Census Bureau will never ask you for:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • Money or donations.
  • Anything on behalf of a political party.
  • Your bank or credit card account numbers.
  • Your personal information is kept confidential.
  • The Census Bureau is bound by federal law to protect your information, and your data is used only for statistical purposes.

Your responses are compiled with information from other homes to produce statistics, which never identify your home or any person in your home.

Respond to the Census Online, by Phone, or by Mail

Responding to the U.S. Census has never been easier. It is safe, secure, and confidential whether you respond online, by mail, or by phone. Your census answers are anonymous, and your information and privacy are protected.

This is the first time residents can respond to the census online, using a computer, phone, or tablet. If you respond using the online questionnaire, know that you cannot save your progress. You must complete the census in one sitting.

If you leave the 2020 Census questionnaire inactive for more than 15 minutes or if you do not submit, your answers will not be saved. You will need to start over. This questionnaire must be completed and submitted in one session.

  • You must complete your questionnaire once you begin. If you leave the questionnaire and return later, you will have to start over.
  • Do not use the web browser buttons (back, forward, or close browser). Use the buttons within the questionnaire to navigate.

Where will you be living on April 1, 2020? (Help)

– Please provide a complete street address for your residence.
– Provide the street address you would use to have a package delivered directly to your residence, not a rural route or P.O. Box address used for mailing purposes.
– A street address is the most helpful for processing your response.

Responding by Mail

Homes will begin receiving their invitation to respond to the 2020 Census between March 12 through April 1.

Homes in areas that are less likely to respond online will receive a paper questionnaire with their initial invitation.

Bilingual invitations and paper questionnaires in English and Spanish will be sent to select areas of the country.

Follow-up mailings to households that do not respond online or by phone will include paper questionnaires.

When responding, use blue or black ink to fill in the questionnaire. Do not use a pencil. For more information on the questions asked in the questionnaire, visit the Questions Asked webpage.

When finished, return the questionnaire in the envelope provided. If you have lost your return envelope, please mail your completed questionnaire to:
