‘The Fed seems to know only two things: how to inflate bubbles and how to studiously not recognize them.’ Why Fund Managers May Be Right About the Fed By JESSE EISINGER
… what these investors are expressing should trouble all of us: they have almost no confidence in the Federal Reserve or the economics profession. And for good reason. It’s impressive that the Fed and many economists have successfully predicted the path of interest rates and inflation in the wake of the worst financial crisis in a generation. But neither the central bank nor academicians managed to predict or prevent the crisis in the first place. The failure dwarfs the accomplishment.
The Fed’s track record is out-and-out abysmal. Fund managers remember only too well how Alan Greenspan encouraged the stock bubble of the late 1990s, convincing investors that he would bail them out if the stock market dropped severely. Worse, Mr. Greenspan urged people in 2004 to buy homes by taking out adjustable rate mortgages. Then the central bank did nothing to curtail the housing bubble. (Whether the Fed kept rates too low for too long is hotly debated; in Mr. Greenspan’s defense, the credit bubble kept inflating after the Fed started raising rates.)
The Fed began its lender-of-last-resort role in 2007, but did little to avoid or minimize the financial crisis. Once it hit, it did the right thing to flood the markets with money, but — along with the Treasury and a passive Justice Department — let banks and top executives escape penalty.

Fun fact: On Memorial Day of 1927, Trump’s father was arrested at a KKK rally in Queens, NY
What is known, according to a New York Times article about clashes between the Klan and New York City’s “Catholic” police force, was that Trump’s father was arrested and released by police in relation to the march. According to the Post, a flyer passed around the neighborhood ahead of the Klan rally described the need for the rally. “The predication for the Klan to march, according to a flier passed around Jamaica beforehand, was that ‘Native-born Protestant Americans’ were being “assaulted by Roman Catholic police of New York City,’” Post reporter Philip Bump wrote in February 2016. “‘Liberty and Democracy have been trampled upon,’ it continued, ‘when native-born Protestant Americans dare to organize to protect one flag, the American flag; one school, the public school; and one language, the English language.’”

Research published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, identified two plant compounds that could hold the secret to preventing conception.
The calcium channel of sperm (CatSper) is essential for sperm hyperactivated motility and fertility. The steroid hormone progesterone activates CatSper of human sperm via binding to the serine hydrolase ABHD2. However, steroid specificity of ABHD2 has not been evaluated. Here, we explored whether steroid hormones to which human spermatozoa are exposed in the male and female genital tract influence CatSper activation via modulation of ABHD2. The results show that testosterone, estrogen, and hydrocortisone did not alter basal CatSper currents, whereas the neurosteroid pregnenolone sulfate exerted similar effects as progesterone, likely binding to the same site. However, physiological concentrations of testosterone and hydrocortisone inhibited CatSper activation by progesterone. Additionally, testosterone antagonized the effect of pregnenolone sulfate. We have also explored whether steroid-like molecules, such as the plant triterpenoids pristimerin and lupeol, affect sperm fertility. Interestingly, both compounds competed with progesterone and pregnenolone sulfate and significantly reduced CatSper activation by either steroid. Furthermore, pristimerin and lupeol considerably diminished hyperactivation of capacitated spermatozoa. These results indicate that (i) pregnenolone sulfate together with progesterone are the main steroids that activate CatSper and (ii) pristimerin and lupeol can act as contraceptive compounds by averting sperm hyperactivation, thus preventing fertilization.

Discrimination is a reality in a world of personalized promotions.
Stores like Walmart, Target, and Macy’s uses beacons to track where customers are in their stores so its apps can send them personalized offers. You might be standing in the diaper aisle and be sent a better deal than the person next to you. And the algorithm that determines that discount might use all kinds of factors such as past purchases and zip codes to make that decision.

Microsoft calls to end government-secret hacking techniques
By Joe Uchill – 05/14/17 08:48 PM EDT 1 http://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/333378-microsoft-calls-to-end-government-secret-hacking-techniques
On the heels of a historic ransomware attack that may have used leaked NSA hacking methods, Microsoft is calling for governments to cease stockpiling secret means of bypassing software security.
“Repeatedly, exploits in the hands of governments have leaked into the public domain and caused widespread damage. An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the U.S. military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen,” wrote Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer at Microsoft, on a company blog Sunday evening.
WanaDecrypt0r, alternately known by names like Wanna Cry, struck hundreds of thousands of computers in more than 100 nations. Since the attack began Friday morning, victims have ranged from hospitals in the U.K. to a telecom in Spain, U.S.-based FedEx to the Russian Ministry of the Interior.
WanaDecrypt0r was so virulent in part because it used a Windows hacking tool that appears to have been stolen and leaked from the NSA. Though Microsoft had patched the security hole in Windows that tool used in March before it was leaked in April, businesses often lag in installing updates for reasons including industry-specific software being incompatible with the most current version of operating systems.
“[I]n February [we called] for a new “Digital Geneva Convention” to govern these issues, including a new requirement for governments to report vulnerabilities to vendors, rather than stockpile, sell, or exploit them,” wrote Smith.
By reporting bugs instead of using them to conduct hacking espionage, manufacturers would be able to increase the cybersecurity of all of its users. That would come at the cost of intelligence and sabotage operations.
There have been rules concerning which circumstances U.S. agencies can keep security vulnerabilities they discover secret. The Obama administration set up the Vulnerability Equities Process (VEP) to require agencies to presume they will report software flaws they discover to manufacturers. It also gave the option of arguing to third-party panel why they should keep a vulnerability secret and abiding by that ruling.
The VEP is opaque. It is varying degrees of unclear how good agencies were at following it, how often vulnerabilities were kept or whether the Trump administration changed any standards.
Legislators have toyed with the idea of codifying the Obama rules in the past.
On Friday, as WanaDecrypt0r raged out of control, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) touted legislation he was creating with “industry stakeholders” that would make the process more transparent.
“It is deeply disturbing the National Security Agency likely wrote the original malware,” wrote Lieu in a statement.
